How I Think How I Met Your Mother Will End #HIMYM

After the episode Monday, everybody is buzzing as to what will happen with the mother. Actually, everybody have been buzzing and guessing for a couple years now. I don't know how we started on this road but everybody is  here. Mostly everybody thinks that the mother is dead. So of y'all maybe be hearing this for the first time, so this might be one time too many for you. So let me find the middle.

We see Ted and the mother in 2024, and things are nice at first (they're an old married couple, they realize), but as Ted starts to tell a story of Robin and Barney's wedding day in the present, the tone gets somber ("I don't want you to be the guy who lives in his stories") and then sad, when Ted starts to cry because the mother guesses that Robin's mom actually make it to her wedding. It's the words "Of course she showed up. What mother is going to miss her daughter's wedding?" that prompt the tears, which is not a normal reaction when everything is going smoothly. So what could be going on? Here are a few theories about the mother's ultimate fate.

She's Dead
This seems to be the most popular theory after this week's episode. When Ted cries over "What mother is going to miss her daughter's wedding?", it sounds like he's crying because his wife won't be alive for their daughter's wedding. Thus, Ted is telling his children the story of how he met their mother because she's gone.

Ted Has Alzheimer's

This is another depressing option, but it leaves the mother's health out of it. In this case, Ted retelling his stories could be an exercise before they're all gone, and it's possible he cries because he knows he won't remember future memories like his daughter's wedding.

Okay, that's the two biggest that most people think it will end with.

Here's what I think will happen.

Everybody is  freaking out over the last scene, and so was I for a while.Between the 45 days speech (seen below) and last night's episode, the theory that the Mother is dead makes more sense than ever.

But what is that's what they want us to think. The show is unique precisely because of its ability to mislead us and surprise us.

The writers are treating us the same way Barney is with Robin; misdirection and deceit are what they do, and they love to mess with us. They do it not to punish us, but to prepare us for a wonderful surprise. The show just might end up with Ted working at a pet care shop or becoming a Orthodontics. Just crazy the way the ending of the show is coming.

So yes, her dying makes a lot of sense now, but there's a twist at the end. We know that from the interviews and tweets and so on. With last night's episode, her death is nowhere near as shocking as it would've been without, so that makes me think there's something else going on.

And they're telling us that themselves, in the episode title.
Vesuvius is a volcano, so the use of it as a title symbolizes an eruption, something unexpected suddenly blows over. Most of us assumed it'd be a episode where the wedding goes horribly wrong, but nothing happened of particular significance.

Until the last scene that is. The eruption is us, our reaction to it. But you also have to remember, in the 2nd episode, the first time we ever see Ted and the Mother together, there's a scene in which Ted guesses Vesuvius as an answer to his crossword puzzle, then prematurely celebrates before realizing it doesn't fit. I might be overthinking it, but I believe it to be a clue. Vesuvius doesn't fit. I'm not even gonna try and guess what it is, I'm sure I'll get it wrong, but I'm confident in saying that, Vesuvius doesn't fit. I don't think the Mother dies.
Anyway, sorry for making it so long, and for being repetitive if that's also the case.
